What the numbers mean

The first digit in an IP rating covers protection against solid particles. A rating of 6 means dust-tight. The second digit covers water protection. IP65 addresses water jets, while IP67 includes protection against temporary immersion under the defined test conditions.

The module and enclosure are different

A sealed LCD module can provide a protected display core inside a larger totem or street-furniture enclosure. The rating of one component does not automatically apply to the complete installation. Doors, vents, glands, speakers, connectors and site workmanship can all affect the finished system.

Why fanless design helps

Conventional cooling fans require airflow openings and filters, creating maintenance points and potential routes for dust or moisture. A sealed, fanless architecture can reduce these risks, provided the passive thermal system is designed for the expected heat load and solar gain.

Questions to ask a supplier

Confirm what was tested, whether the rating applies to the module or complete product, how cables enter the system, how service access is sealed and how internal temperatures are monitored. For exposed locations, also consider IK impact protection, glass treatment and corrosion resistance.
